Reflecting on the meaning of the gospel message for Sunday, June 8th, 2008:
An African-American congressman tells the story of how his parents always reminded him vav segregation "don't get in the way" and "it's the way it is". However this congressman has learned that the only way to make progress for the issues he cares about is to "get in the way". I think when Jesus goes to Matthew's party he is getting in the way of all those who would destroy life rather than save it. I want to stay in his company and"get in the way" of prejudice and injustice wherever he leads me. - John Staples

Jesus was not reluctant to tell the "church authorities" of his day when he saw them out of synch with God's message of reconciliation and love. At St. Paul's, "we" are not only IN a church, "we" ARE the church. We have the Vestry and committees and a rector and diocesan officials as part of a necessary, though sometimes opaque, administrative structure. But "WE" are the very church authorities to whom Jesus speaks today. Do we really try to hear him? Do we WANT to hear him when he tells us that we might be overly immersed in structure and sometimes oblivious to those who need reconciliation and love?
